The Shape Of Jazz To Come Orchestra Concert
Sometimes the music world gets hit with such force that it causes that world to shift. In Jazz it was Louis Armstrong and then Charlie Parker and then Ornette Coleman. With the release of Shape Of Jazz To Come and the Ornette Coleman Quartet appearance at New York’s 5 Spot Café the future arrived. In 1959 the freedom of abstract expression had not yet reached the music world. Ornette Coleman took on the battle to express what you wanted how you wanted.

Who’s Ornette? What’s Shape of Jazz? In 1959 Ornette Coleman announced his presence releasing the album The Shape Of Jazz To Come. He seemingly arrived out of nowhere to play a 2 week engagement on New York’s lower eastside. It turned into a 4 month run of boiling hot controversy. Was it noise or was it music? Was he a charlatan or a musical visionary? Ornette Coleman turned the jazz world on its head. Becoming the most polarizing figure in music at the time and paving the way for the freedom of musical expression that’s the norm today. Shape project / composers, lineup.
